On February 25, 2021, “Mingyu” became top trend on Twitter after south Korean rapper “Kim Mingyu” was accused of sexual harassment in the school by a girl who claims to be his classmate.
Since ‘Mingyu’ appeared on Twitter’s trending page, many users are wondering what happened with Mingyu and why Mingyu is trending.
To answer all the questions above, here is a brief overview.
Mingyu was accused of being friends with bullies on Cyworld. The OP claims that they (Mingyu and the girl who became the victim of sexual harassment and bullying by Mingyu) were from both the same elementary school and middle school as Mingyu and were even in the same commencement year as him.
According to details, On February 22, an anonymous netizen came forward on a popular online community and accused Seventeen’s Mingyu of having been a part of a delinquent group of bullies during his middle school days at Burim Middle School.
Since the allegations, Pledis Entertainment stated that the rumors about Mingyu being a bully are completely false and said, “We checked with Mingyu and the rumors are completely false and have no basis. We don’t understand why anyone is making these claims.“
However, more accusations continue to surface against the idol group member. On February 25th, a new allegation was posted on Nate Pann, the popular online community, where the writer of the post claimed that Mingyu had sexually harassed her.
She provided a detailed map of the school classroom where she was bullied by Mingyu. She claimed that whenever she would volunteer to say the answer to a question, Mingyu would ridicule her by saying, “What do you know?” The victim continued to explain that Mingyu was part of a group of boys who would pick on her and he would continue to make sexual jokes around her.
She claimed, “That boy would also…say sexual jokes around me. He would say those things even with the teacher around. It was to the point the teacher had to say, ‘Don’t say those things since we have girls here.’ It wasn’t as bad when the teacher was there, but he didn’t change a bit when the teacher wasn’t in the classroom.”
The writer of the post, who is the victim of the bullying, claimed that she has been receiving therapy because of her difficult time in middle school. She explained the reason she is revealing this now is that she believed it would be okay to endure it by herself. She thought she was the only victim, so she remained quiet.
She stated, “I am suffering from depression and anxiety, so I didn’t want to fight against someone if I do make this post. I also thought he was only bad to me. However, I decided to write this post because so many people were shielding him from the other allegations. So I am writing this so people can know. I just want to let people know that these things happened and that he’s the type of person who did those things.”
OP posted proof of her medical record, which clearly states that the patient “is uncomfortable talking to her younger sister about a friend (mingyu) who had harassed her in the past and is now an idol.” please believe the victim. See Mingyu’s victim statement and proof, below.
A photo of their yearbook from middle school was uploaded as proof along with a handwritten note of the post contents and date.
Mingyu was just one of many that did not like her (the victim) in the class. OP said Mingyu said “don’t touch me” to her – not that it makes it okay but the tweet’s op makes it look misleading.
When the victim wanted to voice an opinion he (amongst others) shut her down. .. and so the victim started speaking less and less in class until they did not speak at all. That is what happened.
However, the OP explained that everyone was friends with everyone on social media.
Other than people he really didn’t know, he was comfortable and friendly to everyone and he could strike up a conversation with everyone. His social skills were good and even if you didn’t know him, if you met him in the corridors or the field by chance and spoke to him, you’d be good friends with him soon enough. That’s how kind and friendly he was.
As to what kind of kid he was, he would eat everyday during lunch then play soccer and futsal on the field. He only wore his PE uniform everyday and he was a normal kid. After he became a trainee, he only went for morning classes. I’m not close to him and he probably forgot about me now but I was so surprised seeing an article on him that I came quickly to explain.
OP
OP ended off with a note to fans, telling them to continue to support their idol. No other statement regarding this new piece of news has been given by the company.
People are reacting to the allegations made by the girl against Mingyu. Some people are supporting Mingyu but most of people are standing in the support of the victim.
A fan asked fellow fans of Mingyu to not rush towards the conclusion and wait for the whole fact come out.
“Imagine if whole Mingyu situation is just lie like what happened to T-ara? but when people realize it— it will be too late for him?….
I mean can’t y’all just calm down for a bit?and don’t take anyone’s side?Just don’t cancel anyone yet ffs,” a fan wrote.
“pledis should let mingyu speak abt this issue. he’s a grown up man who does not need a spokesperson to cover up his wrongdoings,” said another fan.”
However, an angry fan wrote: “ya’ll mfs should stop defending mingyu, stop dragging svt and 97line, stop using the mingyu situation for petty fanwars…ngl but some of you can’t even imagine how much the viticm has been through/must be going through till this date, try to respect the viticm.”
Someone, from the class, said that the girl, who Mingyu harassed, has details of her therapy and accounts of what happened. In that case, the proof is substantial (ofc I’ll try to check it for myself instead of taking someone’s word for it). If the story is true then I hope the girl is okay.
Some of the reactions i’m seeing are so disappointing…it’s “believe the victim” until the accusations are about an idol, right? then we have to wait until their company releases a statement. are yall hearing yourselves?
This isn’t an issue relating to a “dating scandal” or an instance of CA that we can conveniently blame on the stylists or visual team or whatever. this is something really serious that mingyu (allgedesly) CHOSE to do, prior to becoming an idol and it’s not like pledis can offer definite proof that he DIDN’T do it.
What exactly is his company supposed to say & how will it ease your worries? if they deny these claims & give the generic warning that they will investigate this situation, it won’t prove anything…and it will look like mingyu isn’t willing to address things himself.
I guess i just don’t see why you would settle for a company statement or why you would wait for one before passing judgement. it seems like some people wanna discredit the victim or hold off believing them/at least hearing them out.
The fact that you will value a company’s words this much is kinda gross, actually. pledis’ priority is to make a profit. if they need to give out a vague bs statement in order to protect a group that makes them money, they will do it. you can’t wait for them to act before you do.
